LOTERIA !!!!!!!

“Don Ferruco en la Alameda” sings a voice as shows a card. At least tree of the players place their bean over the board, is the mexican bingo: “la lotería”. Kids learn the rhymes attached to the figures, as they relate those images to the tales and legends told by their grandparents. Then “el catrín”, that handsome and well dressed guy, walks along watching their game.
This time, players get surprised by a new card. As in the mexican “lotería” there is no valid card if it does not is acompanied by a rhyme, the "gritón" calls: “Luz, color y forma que flota en el agua: ¡La malaguaaaa!” [Ligth, color and form floating on the water: La malagua].
Last year it was to Highland Park, by the end of 2008 the turn is to Milwaukee, La Malagua flies away from home again and this time they do it presenting an exercise that allows to testify the evolution of the group. They will be presenting their work called Lotería at Latino Arts gallery, from september 30th to october 29th. Also artists Yesika Felix, Ireri Topete, Fernando Sanchez and Sergio Martínez will be holding workshops on etching.
La Malagua was born as a collective group on 1999 and the production of some of the cards of the “lotería” was then one of their first projects. They where very young upcoming artists living at Puerto Vallarta, starting to use etching as a aesthetic tool, do they decided then to aproach the project using xilography.
That time, each plate was worked by every member on the group so they managed to get a homogenic and clean exhibit, showing a direct influence from the Mexican Stamp school.
This new exercise on the “lotería” by La Malagua not only delivers a much more personal map, with an iconography that reveals the character and trace of every member of the collective, but also allows us to find the geography of their group “imaginary”, that still shares not only artistic but intelectual interests.
Finally, on their recent work, the colective could not avoid to include themselves on te new imaginary they propose. A glimpse that permits them to become active part of the cultural movement, but on a very popular way.
